Cell Notes on 1 Peter 2:1-10
1 Peter 2:4 – 10 “Hello, I’m a priest”
Welcome/Ice Breaker Have you ever been to a fancy dress party? What did you go as? Did how you were dressed affect how you acted? If you had to write a “calling card” that described who you are in 5 words or phrases, what would they be? – Student, single, sporty, child of God, holy?
Word How do verses 4 and 6 to 8 describe Jesus? What is the importance of each attribute? Why was the picture of a cornerstone used? How does Peter draw a parallel between Jesus and our status? Is it significant that Peter is describing a group of Christians, and not Christians individually? Of the 4 descriptions in verse 9, which speaks to you the most? Does it help to know that the words used come from a time when the Israelites were aliens, lost in the wilderness, in exile, and seeking the promised land? –Exodus 19:5-6, Isaiah 43 Why do you think that the imagery and phrases used are so very similar to Ephesians 2: 18-22? Do you have difficulty thinking of yourself as a priest and a saint? Why? Can you imagine yourself wearing a badge or hat saying “Saint” or “Child of God” or “Christian”? Would you act differently if you did?
Witness Consider friends who know you are Christian and pray for ways in which your words and your conduct can be distinctive. Discuss and pray for ways in which we can act as “priests” in our community. |
