Notes for Home Groups on Luke-Acts
This week in home group we're exploring the relationship of the gospel of Luke to the book of Acts. We'll then consider what implication that has for us in the 21st Century in London...
Word
Read together Luke 1:1-4 Luke 1:1 ¶ Many have undertaken to draw up an account of the things that have been fulfilled among us, Luke 1:2 just as they were handed down to us by those who from the first were eyewitnesses and servants of the word. Luke 1:3 Therefore, since I myself have carefully investigated everything from the beginning, it seemed good also to me to write an orderly account for you, most excellent Theophilus, Luke 1:4 so that you may know the certainty of the things you have been taught. (NIV)
and Acts 1 :1-5 Acts 1:1 ¶ In my former book, Theophilus, I wrote about all that Jesus began to do and to teach Acts 1:2 until the day he was taken up to heaven, after giving instructions through the Holy Spirit to the apostles he had chosen. Acts 1:3 After his suffering, he showed himself to these men and gave many convincing proofs that he was alive. He appeared to them over a period of forty days and spoke about the kingdom of God. Acts 1:4 On one occasion, while he was eating with them, he gave them this command: “Do not leave Jerusalem, but wait for the gift my Father promised, which you have heard me speak about. Acts 1:5 For John baptized with water, but in a few days you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.”
If we consider Luke to be the author of both Luke's gospel and the book of Acts how might we describe his aims across both books?
[Richard Norridge's summary of Acts: Message: unstoppable growth of the “everyone gospel” throughout the known world by the power of the Holy Spirit]
Richard shared four themes that play a prominent role in Acts: 1. Holy Spirit 2. It’s for everyone 3. Prayer 4. Focus on the resurrection Split into four groups and spend 10 minutes exploring one of these themes. Feed back your findings to the rest of the group. [There are two charts below to help you]
Agree together what lessons we're wanting to take away from this brief study of Luke-Acts for us as Christians in home groups today??
Pray together...
